A budget is a plan for your future income and expenditures that you can use as a guideline for spending and saving. Although many Americans already use a budget to plan their spending, the majority of Americans also routinely spend more than they can afford. The key to spending within your means is to know your expenses and to spend less than you make. A good monthly budget can help ensure you pay your bills on time, have funds to cover unexpected emergencies, and reach your financial goals.

Most of the information you need is already at your fingertips. To create or rework your budget, follow the simple steps outlined below to get a clear picture of your monthly finances. You can also use our free online budgeting calculators below to budget for certain specific purchases or events.

1. Add Up Your Income
To set a monthly budget, you first need to determine how much income you have. Using the worksheet at the bottom of this page, write a dollar figure next to each relevant income source. Make sure you include all sources of income such as salaries, interest, pension and any other income–including a spouse’s income if you’re married.

If you get a salary, be sure to use your take-home pay rather than your gross pay. Taxes are usually taken out automatically, but if they’re not, remember to include them as another expense. If you receive money from somewhere not listed, enter the source along with the amount under “other income.”

2. Estimate Expenses
The best way to do this is to keep track of how much you spend for one month. The worksheet below divides spending into fixed and flexible expenses. Fixed expenses are those that generally do not change from month to month, such as rent and insurance payments. Flexible expenses are those that do change from month to month, such as food or entertainment. If some of your expenses for one or more categories change significantly each month, take a three-month average for your total.

3. Figure Out The Difference
Once you’ve totaled up your monthly income and your monthly expenses, subtract the expense total from the income total to get the difference. A positive number indicates that you’re spending less than you earn–congratulations. A negative number indicates that your expenses are greater than your income. This means you will need to trim your expenses in order to begin living within your means.

Well done–you’ve created a budget. The next step is to track your budget over time to make sure you’re sticking to it. If you find you aren’t able to follow your budget successfully, it may mean that your plan isn’t flexible enough. It can take revisiting your budget a few times to find the balance that works for you.

I grow up with my father taking me to exercise and play sports. He used to tell me to never make an important decision before exercising. Once I heard: An athlete does not enjoy the pain of training an athlete enjoys the results of having trained.
Say to yourself no matter what the conditions are today I am going to exercise.

Gaining real world leadership experience through volunteering

One of the reasons I attended a federal military academy as a young man, rather than a normal university, was that I knew I needed to develop leadership skills if I wanted to become an entrepreneur. After graduation, I went into the U.S. Marine Corps and became a pilot to test my skills in the real world.

I still remember the commanding officer of my Vietnam squadron saying, “Gentlemen, your most important job is to ask your troops to risk their lives for you, your team, and your country.” He went on to say, “If you don’t inspire them to do that, they will probably shoot you in the back. Troops don’t follow a leader who does not lead.”

The same thing goes on in businesses every day. Most businesses fail because they have weak leadership, not because of outside factors.

Say, “I’ll do that.”

One of the most valuable lessons rich dad taught me about leadership was, “A leader’s job is to bring out the best in people, not be the best person. If you are the smartest person on your business team, your business is in trouble.”

Naturally, I get many questions from people on how to be a better leader. I always have the same advice: Volunteer more.

In most organizations, it is hard to find people who actually want to lead. Most people are just fine being told what to do.

I tell people, “At your church, volunteer to take on projects. At work, volunteer to lead projects. In your community, volunteer to coach sports teams.” By doing this, you can gain valuable leadership experience—and make a lot of friends who can help you out down the road, both in business and in life.

The secret of a true leader

Through volunteering, you can get feedback on your real-life leadership skills. If you volunteer to lead and no one follows, you have some real-life learning and correcting to do! You’ll need to ask for some feedback and act on it.

A true leader knows when to listen to others. I have said before that I am not a good businessman or investor. I am average. I rely on the advice of my advisors and team members to help me be a better leader.

And the secret is, that’s one of the greatest traits of a leader—to ask, genuinely, how they can be better. As my squadron commander used to say, “True leaders are not born leaders. True leaders want to be leaders and are willing to be trained.”

Improve your leadership skills by learning from other like-minded individuals in our free, online community.

Contrary to what most people think, it is true that anyone can know how to become an entrepreneur. However, not everyone can be a successful entrepreneur. The low salary and huge pressure that most employees encounter in their work cause many to look for alternative ways to generate income. The recent crisis in the economy has also left a lot of people to lose their jobs and companies also stopped hiring more employees. The lack of employment opportunities is also one factor why people decide to go into having their own business.

There are a lot of schools that offer major and short courses on entrepreneurship. Being an entrepreneur doesn’t require the person to have a doctorate degree on business. Some just become one just by trying things out by themselves. But some who ventures into having their own business ended up losing more what they can afford. This is why it’s important that before you invest your hard earned money into a business venture, you must first understand some principles on how you can better prepare yourself to be a good entrepreneur.

Being an entrepreneur requires you to have certain characteristics that can help you become successful in your business venture. Some of the important traits that you need to develop include patience, determination, analytical and problem solving skills, integrity and ability to interact with other people. Creativity is also a very important characteristic that you need to possess. Successful entrepreneurs never stop thinking about new ideas and ways on how they can add value to the market. They use their creativity so that they can come up with fresh content and be ahead of their competitors. Although you may not have all these traits and characteristics, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be an entrepreneur. These traits can be learned and developed through practice and experience.

Before you invest any amount on your start up business, you must first have a carefully written business plan. A business plan is not only something that you only present to your investors, but this should be a detailed guide on how you plan to go about with your business. This should include how you will come up with your starting capital, suppliers, location, marketing plan, staffing and how you plan to expand your business.

As stated earlier, creativity is one of the most important factors in your business. It is a fact that you can start a business even without any money, but you can’t start any business if you don’t have any business idea. Successful entrepreneurs should be able to come up with their own business idea. If you currently don’t have any idea for your business, then here are some tips on how to choose the best idea for your business. One effective way is through research. Find out things that can help others like your family, friends or co-workers. Know what they need and help them address it. In every business, you must never forget to give back. Even in business, it is still true that you get more when you give more.

The importance of a diverse team to build a big business

In my teachings on the CASHFLOW Quadrant, I make the case for building a business on the right side of the quadrant – for being in the B-quadrant. Inevitably, some people come up to me who work for themselves and convince me that they are doing what I talked about.

I have to explain to them that they are not in the B-quadrant, but instead in the S-quadrant. They are self-employed, not business owners. They own a job, not a company or system.

A team makes all the difference

The natural question is, “What is the difference between a B-quadrant business and an S-quadrant business?”

My reply is, “The team.”

Most S-quadrant businesses are either structured as sole proprietorships or partnerships. They could be teams, but not in the way B-quadrant businesses are teams.

B-quadrant businesses bring different types of people with different skills together to build something greater than each individual. S-quadrant businesses bring the same types of people together, but they don’t build something greater than the individuals; they simply offer more of the same.

The tetrahedron business model

One of my greatest teachers was R. Buckminster Fuller. One of Fuller’s passions was to find what he called “the building blocks of the universe.” In his search, he found out that squares and cubes do not exist in nature. His belief was that nature was built with tetrahedrons.

When I look at the great pyramids of Egypt, I understand a little more of what Fuller was talking about. Tall skyscrapers come and go, but the pyramids have withstood the test of time through many centuries.

The prefix “tetra” means four. In other words, a tetrahedron has four points. After studying with Fuller, I began to see the importance of having structures with a minimum of four points.

The following are graphic depictions of different business structures:

The most stable of these businesses is a B-quadrant business. In detail, it would look like this:

How it works

A well-managed business will have excellent employees. They are an extension of the business owner and represent the business to the customer.

It will also have a good team of specialists, such as lawyers, accountants, and more. While specialists may not participate daily in the business, their guidance is invaluable in keeping your business moving in the right direction.

Investors fund the business and allow it to become financially viable, while the business owners set the vision and direction for the business, leading the teams forward.

The structure has a better chance of being stable and enduring if all four of these points are working in concert.

What does this mean for you?

If you’ve been trying to build a business, but have found it difficult, it may be time to sit down and do a sober assessment. What kind of team have you built? What model is your business built on? How many points does it have?

If you find that you’re lacking at least four points, it may be time to make some changes. This is not to say you can’t be successful following other models, but it’s that much harder because they are that less stable. And businesses that don’t follow the tetrahedron model rarely grow to be large.

It’s all about knowing what you want and making the right changes to get there.

The secret of success is not really all that dark, and vague. However success cannot be specifically defined for everybody because it is something that is defined quite differently by each individual. You have to give it your own personal definition of success, only then you can identify the secret of success.
And know that each person will be influenced by different key factors:

  • Based on our past experiences, role models, personal motivations and our goals, our interpretation of Success is very differently. For some it might be to buy a bigger house, while others just want to travel around the world and join the Peace Corps. Based on your own value, you can contemplate your own definition of success, so not your friends value or the media’s value, only your own. By defining your own personal success it directly influences the secret of, or critical factors of success.
  • As we go through life, circumstances change, values change, priorities change, So your view of success will change also at various times throughout your life. What you find being successful in college might be very different when you are raising your family. For now it is important that your definition of success will continue to change, so do not be afraid of pursuing an outdated version of it. Success factors will change over time.
  • Once you achieve success in life, you can sometimes measure the success and sometimes not. For example, receiving a certain amount of wealth is one measurement. But on the other hand a successful relationship may be more important to some people, and it can only be measured by how the two partners feel about each other as they are together and years pass by. Once you have your own definition of success, you must know how to measure it, this way you can celebrate you success and feel successful. On the other hand measurement is also important to make sure to stay on the right track to your success.
  • Very, very few people achieve success accidentally. People who do achieve success and obtain it for a longer period, first defined it then planned for it; So they set a goal to achieve it. They also know very well that the secret of success changes, depending on the goal.

So what do you have to do next. First of all define what it means to achieve success for yourself, your next step is to set goals that will lead you to your definition of success. You must create realistic, viable plans to achieve those goals. Follow your plans, be flexible and the most important of all is to enjoy the process.
